And another prop test
« on: July 21, 2010, 09:34:31 PM »

Tried a Powertech 15 x 17p 4 blade on Sunday & it went pretty well....I think.  With 4 blokes (some big) & 2 eskies plus gear was pulling 1.3km/L across the bay at about 50kmh on the way to the bar, which is better than my current smaller diam 4 blade SOLAS.  Will do some propper comparison trials soon, but fingers crossed at this stage.

This one has huge transom lift, too much in fact, but as it has less rake than my current one this makes sense.  A possible downside is with the increased cruise speed (for a certain rpm) I am back to where I was with the original 3 blde - not an ideal spot on the torque curve when it gets lumpy.  Swapped this one for the 'short' Merc prop i previously tried with a guy from Ausfish, and both of us seem happy with the improved performance, so all is good.  At least I can say to the missus this one did not cost anything  ;D ;D

Nah, got to assemble the time, weather, & crew - or those belonging to the props I need to borrow  ;D.

So far powertech has pulled back some speed in the mid cruise, ~0.1 or sometimes 0.2 km/L better, reaches 59/6000 no probs, but suffers from vent a bit too easy on my rig.  Still have it on for more trials, but you can try it on yours if you like John.
